Ronald McDonald House
History:
In 1974, Kim Hill, 3 year old daughter of Philadelphia Eagle, Fred Hill
was diagnosed with leukemia. For 3 years, Fred and his wife often camped
on hospital chairs and
benches and ate meals out of vending machines.
The Hills watched other parents do the same thing especially families
who couldn’t afford hotel rooms. Through the Hills they created
the first Ronald McDonald House
and opened in 1974 in Philadelphia. By
1979, ten more houses had opened. By 1984, McDonald Restaurants and local
communities founded 60 more. Then in 1989,
53 more opened. Today, there
are 240 Ronald McDonald Houses in 25 countries around the world.
Purpose:
The purpose of this house is to provide a home-away-from home for families
of seriously ill children who are receiving treatment in nearby hospital.
Some travel a great distance to get medical attention they need. Accommodation
is hard to come by and options are limited to costly hotels.
The Ronald McDonald House provides a comfortable support as they serve
as temporary residence where family members can sleep, eat, relax
and
find support from other families in similar situation. In return families
are asked to make donations ranging $5 to $20 per day. Families
who can’t
afford, the stay is free.
Ronald McDonald Massage Volunteers:
Because of the tremendous needs of these families, several AMTA massage
therapists in Pennsylvania opened their heart, found time, and spend priceless
effort and
volunteer to help these kids and their families.
