Central Unit Ronald McDonald House Massage Project

Author: Camille Baughman

Before I begin to list details around our project, I thought some history might be in order. The Ronald McDonald House Massage Project has

been in operation since 1997. Rhonda Giddings was the AMTA member who organized our effort at the Hershey House. In January 1999

Rhonda decided to focus her energies in other areas of her life and I was asked to take over. She brought me on board to a project that was

running smoothly due largely in part to her organizational skills, the wonderful working relationship with the manager of the House, Todd Laser,

and the commitment of many of you, AMTA members.

We started out serving the parents and volunteers of the home, once a month. We now average twice a month at the

home and one a day a month in Hershey Medical Center at the Ronald McDonald Lounge on the Children’s Ward. The

Penn State Children’s Hospital Family Consultant Program and Parent to Parent of Central Pennsylvania host an afternoon

tea for the adult family members of Penn State Children’s Hospital pediatric patients. Through the tireless effort and

commitment of Patricia Agonosti, this part of the project has been up and running for about 8 months.

Projects such as these can’t happen without the efforts of many. There is truly a ripple effect that occurs when you give from

your heart. A perfect example is the generosity of Oakworks, an internationally known Massage Table manufacturer. They contacted

the AMTA and said they wanted to donate to the project. Through their generosity, when therapists volunteer their time, the additional

effort of bringing a table or chair is not necessary. We now have a table and a chair for the

House, and a chair for the Hospital.

If you would like more information on want to volunteer to “give back”, contact: Camille Baughman,

The schedule for the Hershey Ronald McDonald House is the 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month from 12:30 – 3:30. Current membership in the AMTA is required.

We do not do full body oil massages at this site and sessions are in 15 minute increments with 1⁄2 hour sessions the longest we offer. A CD/cassette player is a

nice addition to your sessions and you need to bring that with you.

The schedule for the Ronald McDonald Lounge Massage in the Hospital is the 1st Friday of the month from 4-6. These sessions are done on the massage chair

that was donated by Oak Works. Once again, music is a nice touch.
