Ronald McDonald House
MASSAGE PROJECT - CENTRAL UNIT
by Camille Baughman

Before I begin to list details around our project, I thought some history might be in order. The Hershey Ronald McDonald House Massage Project has been in operation since 1997 when Rhonda Giddings organized the initial effort to bring massage to the families staying at the Hershey House. In January 1999, I was asked to take over coordinating the project. I was brought on board to a project that was running smoothly due largely in part to Rhonda’s organizational skills, the wonderful working relationship with the manager of the House, Todd Laser, and the commitment of many of you, AMTA members.

We currently offer chair massage to the parents and volunteers at the Hershey Ronald McDonald House on the third Saturday evening of the month from 5:30 – 7:30 and we also offer chair massage on the first Friday of the month from 4-6 at the Ronald McDonald Family Room in the Hershey Medical Center Children’s Hospital.

Projects such as these can’t happen without the efforts of many. There is truly a ripple effect that occurs when you give from your heart. A perfect example is the generosity of Oakworks, an internationally known Massage Table manufacturer. Through their generosity, when therapists volunteer their time, the additional effort of bringing a table or chair is not necessary. We now have a table and a chair for the House, and a chair for the Hospital.

My experience volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House fills me with compassion, humility and a deep respect for the resiliency of the human spirit. I feel blessed to be able to offer my skills and my service and hope that each of you understand how important our monthly visits of massage are to all those we serve. The ability to do service only continues to deepen our connection to others as well as to ourselves.

Any amount of time you can give is greatly appreciated. There is no pressure or expectation for you to volunteer more than what fits your life style and time parameters. The focus is to give back and share the healing gift of touch to those in need. Your generosity and kindness is making a difference, one person and one touch at a time.
